MORE ABOUT

DPSA

DPSA is a Human Rights Organization that was established in 1984 as a national based organization with the sole purpose of lobbying and advocating for the rights of disabled people. The organization is a cross disability, meaning this organization is for all disabled people irrespective of the type of their disability, the footprint of this organization can be found in all nine provinces and in our province Limpopo it’s footprint can be successfully traced in all five Districts with more than 100 branches or support groups.  Mopani and Vhembe being our biggest Districts in terms of membership, followed by Waterberg, Sekhukhune and Capricorn districts. As a membership based organization we have four(4) types or class of membership category as it is outlined in section 6 of our constitution.

A. An ordinary membership where disabled people organize themselves into branches or support groups to represent themselves and those who can’t represent themselves.

B. Cooperate members, which are organizations of disabled people as defined under clause 2(1)(g).

C. Corporate associate members; these are organization other than the organization of disabled people how are willing to protect, upholds, and promote the objectives of DPSA.

D. Associate members who are not disabled, but who are interested in promoting the objectives of DPSA.

DPSA Limpopo is a nonprofit organization ant the product of the NPO Act 71 of 1997 (last amended in November 2022) section 18. Our organization relies heavily on funding being our members fee, which is R20 per member annually. And also funding from the DSD which even though it is not enough but plays a crucial role operationally and administratively, of which we appreciate.

BUILDING A STRONG

MEMBERSHIP BASE

The Disabled People South Africa (DPSA) is a cross-disability, membership-based organization with nine provincial structures, representing all disability types, including physical, visual, hearing, and intellectual impairments. With 450 active branches and around 9,000 members, DPSA aims to grow significantly in the next five years. Limpopo leads in growth, with 107 branches and 2,140 members, striving for “one ward, one branch,” as stated by Provincial Chairperson CDE Tlangelani Mahori.

A strong membership base is crucial for DPSA to influence government and private sector decisions. Its current size already establishes it as a recognized body within the disability sector, advocating for inclusion and representation.

The slogan “Nothing About Us Without Us” underscores DPSA’s commitment to being present at all levels of governance, ensuring decisions affecting disabled people include their voices.
